Report the Loss
Immediately: As soon as you realize your baggage is lost or delayed,
report it to the airline's baggage service office at the airport.
Fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) detailing your flight
information, baggage description, and contact details. Keep a copy
of the PIR for your records.
Retain Documentation:
Keep your baggage claim check (usually a sticker receipt given at
check-in) and boarding pass, as these will be required when filing
your claim. Save receipts for any essential items purchased due to
the delay, such as toiletries or clothing.
Check Baggage Policy and Limits:
Familiarize yourself with the airline's baggage policy, including
any limitations on compensation and the timeframe for filing a
claim. Note any maximum limits on reimbursement for lost baggage,
which may vary by airline and region.
Contact the Airline’s Customer Service:
Contact the airline's customer service department as soon as
possible after your flight. Provide them with your PIR number and
any relevant details. Request information on the status of your
baggage and inquire about the process for filing a compensation
claim.
Submit a Written Claim:
Most airlines require a written claim for compensation. Visit the
airline's website or contact their customer service to obtain the
necessary claim form or instructions. Provide detailed information
about the lost items, including descriptions, approximate values,
and proof of purchase if available.
